CFA Launches KWENTRATO: Mga Bidang Kwento sa Litrato

As part of the Communication Foundation for Asia’s (CFA) broader efforts to bridge the youth and media for total human development, CFA presents “KWENTRATO: Mga Kwentong Bida sa Litrato”.

Capture photos using your smartphones, tablets, or digital cameras, describing “ANG KABATAANG BIDA” and join “KWENTRATO: Mga Kwentong Bida sa Litrato”. We’ll be looking for original photos showing the youth as BIDAs: B-believes in holiness and heroism, I-instrumental to change, D-develops one’s potentials not only for one’s self but also for the common good and, A-advocates kindness and good deeds. Add 3-5 sentences describing each photo to make your BIDA story. Best ten (10) entries will be featured in CFA magazines, websites and will receive prizes.

To accommodate more entries, end of submission is extended until December 12, 2014.

CFA Extends Paglinang 2014 to NFWCP

The Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA) extends Paglinang 2014 to National Federation of Women’s Clubs of the Philippines (NFWCP) in a staggered schedule on June 21 and 28, July 12, 19 and 26, 2014, which offers lectures and activities on Kindergarten and Early Years Curriculum.

The Characteristics of Young Learners and The Importance of Play

The morning session of the first day focused on the Early Years and The Kindergarten Curriculum given by Dr. Zenaida Domingo, Communication Consultant of the Early Child Care and Development Center (ECCD). In the afternoon, Ms. Christina Mercurio, CFA’s Special Projects Team Leader talked about the Characteristics of Young Learners and the Importance of Play.

She also tackled the Developmentally Appropriate Practices in the morning session of Day 2. Highlighting the need to use our mother tongues as medium of instruction starting at the early years, was given by Dr. Ricardo Nolasco, associate professor of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Department of Linguistics in the afternoon session.

The training-workshop is being attended by 62 participants from different Preschools and Daycare centers of the NFWCP Teachers’ Club.

Second Half of Paglinang 2014 Tackles Early Child Care, Science and Math

IMG_0060Discussions and exercises in two separate tracks-yet plying the same route of child development-brought CFA’s Paglinang 2014 to a close. Paglinang was a series of training-workshops on the K-12 curriculum, Early Years Act and Kindergarten Education Act under a Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) framework. The training-workshop held May 26-30, was attended by 55 teachers, education stakeholders, and students from 17 schools and universities.

Keynote speaker was Dr. Zenaida Domingo, Early Childhood Care Development (ECCD) consultant. She said, “Learning begins at birth and for this reason early childhood care and development should be made an essential part of the education system that is now regarded as a lifelong and lifewide enterprise.” Lectures on what MTB-MLE is and what it is not was given by Dr. Ricardo Ma. D. Nolasco, associate professor of the Department of Linguistics in UP Diliman, and convenor of Educational Resources on Multilingualism and Multiculturalism for All Teachers (ERMMAT).

Later in Day One and until early Day Four, the participants divided into two groups. One focused on Science and Mathematics; the second tackled Early Years and Universal Kindergarten. Among the speakers for Group 2 were, Dr. Rosario Alonzo, Dr. Estrella Agustin, Ms. Charla Rochella Santiago, and Asst. Prof. Maria Lourdes Quijano. They made presentations on Roadmaps to Literacy, Language and the Human Brain, Philosophy, Concepts and Methodologies in Early Years and Kindergarten Education Law, Early Literacy, Theories and Principles of Learning, L1-L2-L3 Teaching, Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Big Picture of MTB-MLE Planning, Integration of Different Subject Matter Areas, Translating, Materials Development, Transitioning to L2, English: Techniques and Strategies, Bridge to Written L2, and Planning the MTB-MLE Programs.

The Elementary Science School (ESS) Group from the University of the Philippines National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education (UP NISMED), Dr. Risa Reyes, Ms. Pia Campo, Ms. Sally Gutierez and Mr. Rolando Tan conducted the training-workshop on Science. They discussed and illustrated the Features of Science K to 12: Spiraling of Concepts, Modelling Activities on Sound and Modelling Activities on Solids.

The Math duo of Ms. Pauline Anne Therese Mangulabnan, professor of the De La Salle University Manila and Mr. Roberto Contreras talked about Trends in Learning Mathematics in the Early Grades, Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach in Developing Learning Plans for Mathematics, Principles of Teaching Whole Numbers, Materials Development for Teaching Whole Numbers, Developing Mental Computational Skills Emphasizing on Conceptual Understanding, Problem Solving in the Early Years, and Aligning Materials of Problem Solving to Learning Competencies.

Dr. Padmanabhan “Padhu” Seshaiyer, Director of GMU Center for Outreach in Professional Mathematics Learning and Educational Technology (COMPLETE) spoke in the plenary on the afternoon of Day Five. He shared his teaching philosophy in mathematics, “Here is a problem, find the mathematics to solve it” rather than “Here is the mathematics, go solve the problem.”

The participants came from St. William Parish Nursery-Kindergarten – La Union, Immaculate Heart of College – Paranaque, St. Elizabeth Montessori – Baguio, St. Augustine’s School – Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Hope Day Care Center, Kiddie Miracles Child Care Learning Center, Adamson University, San Nicolas Academy Kindergarten – La Union, La Concolacion – Laguna, Escuela de San Juan – La Union, St. Scholastica’s Academy – Marikina, St. Joseph Catholic School – Q.C, St. Paul College of Makati, St. John the Baptist Learning Center, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Sts. Peter and Paul Learning Center and De La Salle University Manila.

PAGLINANG 2014 Language Arts and Araling Panlipunan Held Successfully

PAGLINANG 2014: A Series of Training-Workshops on the K-12 Curriculum, Early Years Act and Kindergarten Education Act under an MTB-MLE Framework has recently concluded its First Wave: Language Arts and Araling Panlipunan held at Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA) last May 6-10, 2014. The fifteen (15) education stakeholders and teachers represented the following schools: Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Ateneo de Davao University, St. Augustine School of Naguilian, St. Christopher Academy-Bangar, St. Jude Montessori Educational Center of La Union, South Hill School Inc., and Immaculate Heart of Mary CollegeParanaque.

Throughout the first day of the training-workshop, the participants showed interest in the topics such as RA 10533 and the New Language in Education Policy of the Philippines, Sounds, Letters and Grammar in an MTB-MLE classroom, How to make a Working Orthography, and Primer Development. The next day, the training-workshop focused on the Development of Graded Reading Materials, Big Book Making Workshop and Writing and Editing of Stories. Participants gained knowledge on Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) Workshop and Mother Tongue Establishing Identities/Identities and Ethnic Pride on the third day. Lecture on gathering local materials that define a group of people’s culture were taught on the fourth day. The last part of the training-workshop took place on May 10, 2014 which focused on the groups according to language or geographic proximity. Tools, strategies and skills set were imparted by Ricardo Ma. D. Nolasco, Ph.D, Ms. Nemia Cedo and Francisco Datar, Ph.D.

CFA launches Read Along, Read Aloud!

Read Along, Read Aloud! is a compilation of Stage 1 stories for children, ages 3-6. Stage 1 stories are meant for children who are learning to read and who want to become fluent readers. It is also meant to be used and referenced by teachers who want their students to explore the world of reading. This collection can also be used for older children that need readiness and pre-literacy skills.

Copies are now available but this educational CD will be launched on May 6, 2014 during the first wave of Paglinang 2014: A Series of Training-Workshops on the K-12 Curriculum, Early Years Act and Kindergarten Education Act under a Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) Framework.

PAGLINANG 2014 to tackle New K to 12 Curriculum, Early Years Act and Kindergarten Education Act

Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA), together with the Educational Resources on Multilingualism and Multiculturalism for All Teachers (ERMMAT), University of the Philippines College of Education (UPCED), and the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UPNISMED), will host a Series of Training-Workshops on the Early Years Act and the New K-12 Curriculum under the Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) Framework. Experts on MTB-MLE from University of the Philippines, Diliman and De La Salle University, Manila will serve as resource persons.

Dubbed Paglinang 2014, the training-workshop series will present ways to develop learning materials from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 in all learning areas, namely: Language Arts, Science and Health, Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan, integrated with Values Education, Music, Arts and Physical Education.

The goals of the training-workshop are: a) to produce and/or refine prototype learning materials, teachers need to implement the first language (L1)-based curriculum in the early years, kindergarten and the early grades; b) to clarify prevalent misconceptions among educators about K-12/MTB-MLE and equip them with the corresponding teaching strategies and methodologies for effective instruction; and c) to serve as a forum for stakeholders to share, exchange and sum up their experiences in implementing the new MTB-MLE policy and curricula.

The series of training-workshops consist of three (3) waves scheduled as follows at the Communication Foundation for Asia, 4427 Old Sta. Mesa, Manila:
